can you know if the company and or experienced ones, who you rely on initially are helping or using you ?

What I mean is when a person is new to the business,and just started studying to get their license. They work directly or indirectly with a real estate company and because they don't really know the business they have to rely on working with an experienced person to let them know if any business has developed as a result of the new persons efforts. How can you tell if business has come in but your not told and the experienced repss keep the profits?

Great question. Many times you will never know. My suggestion is that if you feel that leads are passed on to more seasoned agents, discuss this issue with the broker or manager. Best of luck!

I have a different thought than perhaps was contained in Thomas P's answer. I believe you have to enter into any business with a trust in yourself and not the other fellow. I realize that there are those that will take advantage of others, but for the most part 80% of the people are trustworthy. Talent is always rewarded, or as an early mentor of mine said, "cream always rises to the top". If you simply learn as much as you can, practice as ethically as is humanly possible and treat others as you want to be treated, in the end it all works out. I offer this after 35 years in commercial real estate, where there have been times that I have been taken advantage of, but on the whole it has worked out. My final thought is be cautious, but remain positive. The business and the world is still a fine place to practice all the good aspects of human nature. There are a lot of fine people here in the business and in the universe in which we surround ourselves.

Dear Henry,
That is a great question. First of all you are and always will be an independent contractor. The exception is if you become a new home salesperson or employed with a W-2 in another manner. Thus, you have to prospect, find, develop your own buyer and sellers. That is the most challenging and rewarding aspect of our "jobs". Read as much as you can on the subject of prospecting and farming for Realtors.
That said, if you are still studying to become a real estate agent consider "interviewing" brokerages. Unless the firm you are "working in" has committed to paying for your studies, in that case you may be obligated to them for a certain period of time. If you can manage to do this on your own I would suggest doing so. That you you can really find the best brokerage firm.
When interviewing ask them about the leads and "floor time" (time you sit in the front desk for walk in customers). It isn't always available but if that is important to you find an office where you can have as much as available. I don't rely on this for leads but all offices provide leads in some manner. Find out how that works. Work on not being frustrated but being focused and diligent about developing your own business profile.
