The majority of states within the U.S. require state licensing for real estate appraisers, including certification with all of the education / experience requirements fulfilled. There are very strict standards within this industry, which all appraisers must abide by.

This varies greatly state to state. The best thing to do is to go the website of the respective state's real estate department. Or if you call a school who teaches appraisal they will be more than willing to give you detailed info. Go to google.com and use keywords; appraisal school (name of state).

All states require licensing or certification for appraisers and most states have several levels. Most have a level for residential, one for multi-family and one for commercial. Each level requires more experience and education.
Additionally, appraisal clients often have additional requirements to join thier list of approved vendors. The MAI designation is one of the most coveted designations in the appraisal industry and requires significant education beyond a college degree, experience, and a comprehensive exam.
